Rio Ferdinand has cheekily suggested that Manchester United should have three Premier League titles retrospectively awarded to them following the landmark Manchester City ruling. The eight-time champions have been under investigation for some time, having been charged with 115 breaches of the league’s spending rules.
It was suggested on Friday afternoon that all top-flight clubs had been informed that City would be found guilty of 114 charges. As it stands, no punishment has been dealt out but a fine, points deduction and expulsion from the top flight have all been mentioned.
Ferdinand’s cheeky response
But former United star Ferdinand believes that they should have some of their titles stripped from them, which would see the ex-defender claim a further winners’ medal. Taking to X in response to the news, Ferdinand wrote: “Another premier league medal to be added to the cabinet.”
Ferdinand then suggested the seasons where the Red Devils finished second under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2017/18 and 2020/21 should also be converted to United title wins. Sharing images of the two former bosses, he wrote: “And another [title] for Jose…. And another for Ole.”
Ferdinand’s previous frustration
Ferdinand’s teasing follows his outburst back in 2024 where he slammed how long the process was taking. He said: “When is this going to get sorted out? Because everybody else’s cases seem to be getting sorted out mighty, mighty quick. Everton have had two dockings this season already this season.
“Nottingham Forest, all these teams are getting docked points. Manchester City’s are just… [pretends to thumb through pages].” He added: “If I was those clubs, I’d be like, ‘let’s see what happens with City first’. But if they get nothing or a little slap on the list, I can see them going nuts.
“When I went to a court case about racism a few months ago, he had one charge. It took two-and-a-half years! They’ve got 115, it’s nuts!”
City’s response
City have already responded to reports that they have been found guilty. A statement read: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.
“The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”
