Harry and Meghan plan royal apology over Oprah interview

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly planning to apologise to the royal family over comments they made during their 2021 TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to a source speaking to Express.co.uk.

In the interview, Meghan said there had been "several conversations" within the royal family about how dark her and Harry's baby might be before Prince Archie was born. She said: "In those months when I was pregnant [there were] concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born."

The source said: "Harry and Meghan have always known since they decided to return to the UK that they would need to eat humble pie. Their one big regret about leaving the royal family for the US was their interview with Oprah, and Meghan knows her biggest mistake was her claim that a royal family member had discussed Archie's skin colour."

Regret over comments

The source added: "Harry was angry with his family at the time, and backed Meghan up, but they now realise what a low blow it was. They both know they're hot-headed and realise they took things too far, and they should have kept quiet."

"They want to focus on the future, and are hoping that will include a reconciliation at some point. They really want a sit-down so they can address what they said, and Meghan will apologise."

Public apology debated

On the latest Daily Expresso episode, host JJ Anisiobi and James Walker, Associate Editor at the Daily Express, discussed the news of the apology. Walker said: "To be honest, I don't know how much to believe it. I believe they're going to apologise but if I were Wills and Catherine, Charles and Camilla, I wouldn't be taking that apology remotely seriously."

He added: "They just want money back in the coffers. They want to be doing stuff in public again. They want the armed police. They want their lives to be easy."

"These guys have got nothing going for them, they're probably just very bored and feel a bit useless and redundant."

Return to the UK

Both hosts said they believed a public apology would be necessary. Anisiobi claimed: "The British public who some of whom were very hurt by accusations against the Royal Family, they're not going to forgive Harry and Meghan."

Last month, the family made a surprise return to the UK, with plans to live in Britain for an "extended" period, and their children are now being schooled in Britain. They arrived back in the UK on August 26, landing at Birmingham Airport after six years living in California.
