Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appeared united during their first joint engagement on British soil since their return, greeting crowds and accepting flowers in Nottingham. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met well-wishers and supported charity projects, with Harry describing it as "great" to be back in the UK. Beneath the smiles, body language expert Judi James identified signs of possible nerves, suggesting their public display of unity was accompanied by moments of vulnerability and a desire to protect one another.
Harry's protective stance and the 'double-cling'
Harry appeared to take on a protective role, at one point placing an arm around Meghan's shoulder. James highlighted the sense of tension beneath their outwardly cheerful appearance as they returned to the British public eye. Meghan reciprocated by placing her arm around his waist, a gesture James described as a "double-cling," making the couple appear to cling to one another like "survivors."
Relief and vulnerability in expressions
Despite apparent nerves, James spotted moments of what she interpreted as relief on the couple's faces, describing their expressions as "facial expressions of delighted relief exchanged." However, she also noticed a possible flicker of worry in Meghan's expression as she looked at Harry.
"As she looked at her husband, her eyes had a micro-expression of what looked like fear or worry, implying some less confident leakage among all the displays of their self-defined victorious return," James said.
Harry's raised palm and Meghan's unease
James described Harry's raised palm towards the crowd as a "hail" gesture, acknowledging the public's reception and projecting a sense of acceptance and continued affection from supporters. The movement also displayed the pair's confidence and happiness as they stopped to interact with well-wishers.
James also highlighted signs of vulnerability while Harry was speaking. "As Harry was in full flight, Meghan sat with one arm wrapped around her own torso in a self-embrace while the other hand was raised in a 'broken wing' gesture of performed vulnerability with the fingers touching her throat, another common sign of feelings of vulnerability," she said. The expert suggested these movements could imply unease beneath Meghan's outward appearance of confidence.
