Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will reportedly not be apologising to Prince William and Princess Catherine, despite rumours that circulated earlier this week. A source close to the duke and duchess has shut down the speculation with a blunt one-word response.
Claims of an apology dismissed
At the start of the week, a source told The Daily Express that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were set to eat "humble pie" and apologise to the future king and queen. The apology was said to relate to claims Harry and Meghan made to Oprah Winfrey in a 2021 televised interview, including allegations that discussions were held among certain members of the Royal Family about the colour of Prince Archie's skin before he was born.
These claims were damaging for the Royal Family, with William insisting publicly at the time that the royals are "very much not a racist family". The source told The Daily Express that Harry and Meghan, who are now back living in the UK for the first time since 2020, wanted to move towards reconciliation.
Source's one-word denial
The source said: "Harry and Meghan have always known since they decided to return to the UK that they would need to eat humble pie. Their one big regret about leaving the royal family for the US was their interview with Oprah, and Meghan knows her biggest mistake was her claim that a royal family member had discussed Archie's skin colour. Harry was angry with his family at the time, and backed Meghan up, but they now realise what a low blow it was. They both know they're hot-headed and realise they took things too far."
However, a source close to the duke and duchess has now dismissed these claims. In a one-word statement, the source told People magazine that the claims Harry and Meghan could apologise are "nonsense".
Reconciliation remains distant
This suggests that an apology may not be on the way from Harry and Meghan to Prince William and Princess Catherine, with whom they have not been on talking terms for some time. If this is the case, reconciliation seems as far away as ever between the couples, who were once dubbed the "Fab Four".
While William and Catherine have not addressed the fact that they do not talk to Harry and Meghan, Harry has hinted multiple times about the rift. He has also said that he would like a reconciliation with his family. In an interview with ITV around the time Harry's memoir Spare was released in 2023, the duke said: "I love my father, I love my brother, I love my family. Nothing of what I've done in this book or otherwise has ever been with any intention of harm to them."
He also said that reconciling with them would be "wonderful". However, it is believed Harry and his brother William have not spoken for several years now. This is despite the fact that Harry said in another interview last year that he would like to be on better terms with his older brother again. He told the BBC last year: "I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious."
Since relocating back to the UK in August, it is believed that Harry has not reunited with any of his royal relatives. He last saw his father, King Charles, in July, before he announced his move back to Britain. There are no plans for Harry and William to meet anytime soon.
