The Duke of Sussex has revealed he "slipped into depression for two weeks" after he and his wife Meghan quit the Royal Family and left the UK. Prince Harry admitted he experienced a "crash unlike anything I'd ever felt before" after giving up his royal duties to start a new life in the US, a move dubbed 'Megxit'.
Adrenaline crash in Canada
Discussing grief with a neuroscientist on an episode of MasterClass, Harry opened up about his feelings after arriving in Canada in late 2019. He said: "Being in Canada, away from the stressful environment where presumably my body was just pumped full of adrenaline, within two or three days, I experienced this adrenaline crash, something that I'd never experienced before."
He added: "It was as though I needed stress for my brain to function. I became useless around the house. I slipped into depression for about two weeks and felt like I couldn't function without adrenaline."
Grief and therapy
In the new MasterClass interview named Redefining Grief: Building Resilience Through Loss, Harry joined neuroscientist Dr. Mary-Frances O'Connor to explore the effects of grief on the body and brain. He revealed he set himself a rule to spend "no more than 10 days away from my wife and kids".
The Prince also said royal life left him unable to grieve the death of his mother, Princess Diana, and that he had not cried for 20 years. He said: "You would think I had the best help in the world. I'm a prince, for God's sake, but I was still grieving and didn't have any place to put those feelings."
Mother's perfume
Harry said a therapist helped him come to terms with his past and encouraged him to spray himself with his late mother's perfume. "It was like being transported to another time," he added. "It unlocked everything that had been locked away. Spraying my mother's scent was almost like knocking certain bricks through so that I could see through and certain memories and experiences could start seeping through."
The development comes after Meghan shared a rare glimpse of Lilibet's voice, revealing her daughter has picked up an American accent. The Duchess shared the footage on Instagram on Tuesday, October 6, featuring her five-year-old daughter. The post incorporated nostalgic photographs from Meghan's childhood alongside previously unseen images connected to her brand.
