Former royal chef: King Charles and Camilla are great bosses

A former royal chef has shared what life is like behind the scenes at the Palace, revealing King Charles and Queen Camilla are great bosses to their staff. Visen Anenden was head chef for the royal couple for nine and a half years, having started working for them in the mid 2000s.

Down-to-earth eating habits

His work saw him overseeing catering for the King and Queen across a number of royal residences. But while many may associate The Firm with lavish banquets and the pomp and circumstance of major royal events, Mr Anenden says the couple are pretty down-to-earth when it comes to their everyday eating habits.

Speaking on behalf of Heart Bingo Slots, he explained that the royals were partial to picnics, with Charles and Camilla known to join the monarch's late father, Prince Philip, at Balmoral for a barbecue, a tradition the Duke of Edinburgh was known for.

Locally sourced produce and sustainability

The family would eat locally sourced produce from the estate, like venison or grouse, with Anenden and his team sorting homemade picnics for them to eat on the hills of the residence, Marie Claire reports.

King Charles, 77, is known for being a passionate advocate for the environment and sustainability, and staff ensured that nothing went to waste, with leftovers would be "turned into a canapé" for the day after.

The Royal Family's website says: "Over the decades, The King, when he was The Prince of Wales, launched a number of sustainability initiatives aimed at delivering practical outcomes."

He also "regularly engages with young people championing the need for sustainable action, including Greta Thunberg at the World Economic Forum in Davos 2020".

Staff treatment

Mr Anenden said those working for the couple were "were always provided" were food was concerned.

Asked whether staff got the leftovers from the royals' meals, he said: "There was no such thing as eating leftovers.

"He treats his staff really well, and so does Camilla."
