EastEnders has confirmed that Charlie Suff will be leaving his role as Johnny Carter, just days after it was announced that his on-screen mother Linda (Kellie Bright) will also depart Walford. Johnny's exit marks the end of an era, as once he and Linda wave goodbye, there will officially be no Carters left on the Square.
Johnny's Storylines and Return
Johnny was reintroduced three years ago with actor Charlie in the role. Since then, he has featured in numerous key storylines, including helping mum Linda cover up her murder of Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) amid The Six story. He supported Linda through her subsequent relapse, liaised with the others involved in the murder cover-up, and more recently enjoyed a relationship with Callum Highway (Tony Clay) while launching a law firm in the Square.
The character first debuted 13 years ago, and this will be his third departure from Walford. Prior to Charlie taking over the role, Johnny was played by Sam Strike and Ted Reilly in two previous stints. Shortly after his original debut, Johnny came out to dad Mick, which proved to be one of the most powerful and talked-about moments in EastEnders history.
Official Confirmation and Carter Legacy
An EastEnders spokesperson told Metro: 'We can confirm Charlie Suff will be leaving EastEnders, and we wish him all the best for the future.' According to The Sun, who first reported the news, Charlie understood that once co-star Kellie was leaving, he would be going too.
The Carter family first arrived in Walford in 2006 with Shirley (Linda Henry), but the clan was famously expanded in 2013 with the introduction of Linda, husband Mick (Danny Dyer), and their children. The Carters became one of Albert Square's most iconic families, living in the Queen Vic for a decade and often at the centre of key stories.
End of an Era
Danny Dyer left in 2022 with Mick vanishing at sea, and Shirley departed soon after. Linda will exit in upcoming scenes, with star Kellie having decided to step away after 13 years. Johnny's departure, following Linda's, means no Carters will remain on the Square, truly ending an era for the iconic family.
