Coronation Street fans think Gary Windass might be bidding farewell to Weatherfield after a shock confession at the end of Sunday night's episode. Gary, played by Mikey North since 2008, promised DS Lisa Connor-Swain to tell the truth at the police station.
Gary's history and recent turmoil
Gary and Sarah Platt broke up in 2019 after she discovered his dangerous involvement with loan shark Rick Neelan, ending their three-year relationship. Since then, they have remained close friends, even when Gary's relationship with Maria Windass became strained. Recently, Sarah asked Gary for help after she accidentally killed Theo Silverton.
Theo was one of five potential victims of "murder week," along with Jodie Ramsey, Maggie Driscoll, Megan Walsh, and Carl Webster. Betsy Swain discovered Theo's body on the night of her mum Lisa's and Carla's wedding. It was later revealed that Sarah killed him after an argument on Todd Grimshaw's flat scaffolding, hitting him over the head with a pole.
The cover-up and Kit's jealousy
In a panic, Sarah called Gary, who helped hide the murder weapon and told her to find an alibi. Sarah later confessed to DC Kit Green, who became determined to protect her. However, DS Lisa Connor-Swain arrested Sarah after finding Theo's blood on her clothes. Sarah confessed to killing Theo in self-defence but has kept Gary's name out of it for his family's sake.
Kit, jealous that Sarah called Gary instead of him, has tried to pin the death on Gary. He kept a copy of Gary's data to show the potential location of the murder weapon.
Gary's decision to confess
On Sunday's episode, Bethany revealed Kit's plan to get Gary to confess that he told Sarah not to go to the police immediately. Sarah convinced Kit to drop it, but Gary had already sought legal advice from Adam Barlow, who told him to come clean. Despite Kit's attempts to stop him, Gary was seen being interviewed by Lisa, swearing to tell the truth.
Fans now wonder if this could mean an exit for Gary after 18 years. On X, @britifyx wrote: "Gary Windass looks set to seal his own fate in Coronation Street, if tonight’s episode is anything to go by," and @lornawatts added: "Gary what are you doing?!" Under an Instagram teaser, one viewer commented: "Hope this isn't lining up for Gary's exit," while another replied: "Gary could say bye to weatherfield here oops."
