Bargain Hunt presenter Eric Knowles has faced the devastating loss of his 26-year-old son, Seb, who was killed in a road accident in May 2015. The fatal collision occurred on the M40 when Seb's vehicle was involved in a crash with a lorry.
Son's Life and Career
Seb Knowles had built his own career as a DJ and bank manager, independent of his father's fame. The father and son shared a close bond, united by a mutual love of music. Eric had previously told the BBC that had he not pursued antiques, he would have become a radio DJ.
Public Grief and Gratitude
Following the accident, Eric took to social media to repost tributes from the public. Four months later, he expressed his gratitude, writing: "Just a much belated but heartfelt THANK YOU to all out there for your kindness and words of support with regard to our son Sebastian."
Career Highlights
Knowles, now 73, began his career in 1976 at Bonhams auction house in London as a porter in the ceramics section. He rose to head of department within five years and opened a second office in Bristol in 1992. His expertise in ceramics and glass led to appearances on Antiques Roadshow and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, before becoming a regular on Bargain Hunt.
In 2021, he was appointed non-executive director of The Hoard Ltd, a decorative art and design emporium, but stepped down from corporate work in November 2023.
Family Memories
Eric has shared childhood memories of watching the show Going For A Song with his family. He recalled to the Lancashire Telegraph how he and his brother Brian would be tasked by their father to estimate item values before experts revealed their appraisals, with the loser doing the washing-up.
Bargain Hunt airs on Saturdays on BBC One at 1.15pm. For bereavement support, Samaritans can be contacted any time on 116 123.
