Armidale Refugees Contrast Joyce's One Nation Vision
Armidale Refugees Contrast Joyce's One Nation Vision

Since 2018, the New South Wales city of Armidale has been a designated site for resettling refugees. The town sits within the electorate of Barnaby Joyce, who was a key voice supporting Armidale's establishment as a refugee resettlement site.

Joyce has since defected from the Nationals to One Nation, a party which wants to ban all migrants who don't speak English. Guardian Australia's community affairs reporter Adeshola Ore travels to Armidale to speak with Joyce and community members, including refugees, to find out how the town squares with One Nation's vision of a monoculture.

Barnaby Joyce's Political Shift

Joyce backs One Nation's 'monocultural' vision of Australia. But the reality in his NSW electorate is very different, as the town's refugee resettlement program has brought cultural diversity to the community.
