Anne Hathaway's Denim Maternity Look Sparks Debate
Anne Hathaway's Denim Maternity Look Sparks Debate

Anne Hathaway, 43, turned heads at the premiere of her new film The End of Oak Street on Sunday, opting for a comfortable yet chic ensemble that has ignited a fashion debate. The actress, who is heavily pregnant with her third child, paired a baby-blue high-neck satin top with a red lining and a train with wide-legged blue jeans and heels.

The dramatic top, designed by Prabel Gurung and styled by Erin Walsh, was cropped at the front, revealing her baby bump. Hathaway announced her pregnancy in June with husband Adam Shulman. Known as one of Anna Wintour's favorite muses, Hathaway's choice has been described as both refreshing and controversial.

Internet Reactions

The look has divided opinions online. One X user, @TunisFromTexas, wrote: 'She is so beautiful and 99.9% of her outfits are IMPECCABLE but this makes me so uncomfy to look at.' Others defended her, with @SmartContracteq saying: 'Low rise jeans at a major Hollywood world premiere while heavily pregnant? Anne Hathaway continues to be the ultimate trendsetter.'

Denim on the red carpet has a history of sparking debate, from Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's matching Canadian tuxedos at the 2001 American Music Awards to Kanye West and Julia Fox's Paris Fashion Week debut in 2022, and model Bhavitha Mandava's jeans and polo at this year's Met Gala.

Embracing Tomboy Style

Hathaway recently told People that being a 'boy mom' has influenced her fashion. 'I have to always be able to go from a serious business meeting to, like, a basketball court. You have to be able to play pickup basketball at any point, in any outfit. So [I tell myself]: When you get dressed in the morning, dress wisely because you 100 percent are going to have a projectile thrown at you probably by the end of breakfast.'

This may be one of the last red carpet appearances for a while, as Hathaway has been busy promoting three films this year: The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, and Mother Mary. She is also set to star in Verity later this year. Fans hope the jeans are welcome to stay when she returns.
