Traitors star warns Maya Jama's smile could expose her

A former Traitors contestant has warned that Maya Jama could be caught out by the Faithfuls due to a recurring habit. Minah Shannon, who appeared on the third series of the BBC show, said the presenter's constant smiling might reveal her as a Traitor.

The Celebrity Traitors returned for a new series on October 1, with 21 famous faces entering the Scottish Highlands for a game of deception and betrayal mixed with secret missions. Claudia Winkleman is back in charge and has chosen presenter Maya Jama and actor Richard E. Grant as the original Traitors, with comedian James Acaster later recruited as the third member of their group.

Within minutes of the Traitors being confirmed in the first episode, Grant explicitly revealed to Joe Lycett that he was a Traitor, leaving the Faithfuls unsure whether he was joking or telling the truth.

Recruitment choice

In the second episode, the Traitors were given a choice between James Acaster and Amol Rajan, with one celebrity set to be recruited and the other facing murder. They chose to recruit Acaster, who was welcomed by Grant and Jama. "James, we'd like to welcome you as a new Traitor to the coven," Grant told him.

As suspicions grow about who the Traitors could be, Jama has so far not appeared to get much heat from the Faithfuls. But she could give the game away if she continues to smile constantly, according to Shannon.

Warning over smiling

Appearing on Thursday's instalment of Morning Live, Shannon warned that Jama could be rumbled by the Faithfuls. She explained: "We have got Maya Jama, who is also a Traitor chosen by Claudia, now I think she is the stronger of the two. However, I am finding she is smiling a lot; she seems really excited to be there."

"For the Faithfuls, there is no reason to smile because you're so paranoid. So I think that might give the game away. She needs to stop smiling."

Dr Kasim Ahmed, who has also starred on The Traitors, agreed with Shannon and joked: "I didn't sleep for about three weeks, and then six months afterward." Morning Live host Gethin Jones added: "It's exhausting to watch, you have to be on your game the whole time."

The Celebrity Traitors airs Thursdays and Fridays at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
