Ruben Dias on dating Maya Jama: 'We tried to be as normal as we can'

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias previously spoke about the public attention that came with dating Maya Jama, as the presenter prepares to appear on the new series of Celebrity Traitors.

Dias on handling attention

Speaking to The Telegraph last year while they were still together, Dias admitted they tried to ignore the constant attention. He said: "No, I think that’s the last thing you think about. We are just both aware of it and there’s no way around it. But at the end of the day, you don’t make it about it. You make it about everything else and then that’s an extra you have to deal with and, obviously, be smart with it."

Explaining how Jama liked to handle attention, Dias added: "I think in a way, maybe she would like to avoid certain kinds of situations just to be more comfortable, also being a woman. It’s obviously more difficult to tell someone to stop if they’re being rude. And I’ve kind of got an easier way to do it myself. But being together, I just push it to be normal and we try to be as normal as we can. I feel like we can."

Jama's Celebrity Traitors debut

Jama and Dias spent around 18 months together after meeting in 2024. They lived together in Manchester while Dias played for City, and split earlier this year.

Celebrity Traitors returns to BBC One this October for a second series, with Jama joining the likes of Michael Sheen and Leigh-Anne Pinnock in the Scottish Highlands. Jama admitted her fellow contestants may struggle to work her out on the show.

She said: "I’ve thought about this a lot because I honestly don’t know what people’s perception of me is. If you’ve only watched me on Love Island, you probably just see me walking in, having a chat and sending people home. I can be warm, but can also be quite direct when I need to be, so maybe people won’t quite know what to expect. If they’ve listened to me on the radio, they might have a better idea of what I’m actually like."
