Hollyoaks brought its missing-person storyline to the streets of Chester, with fans and unsuspecting members of the public watching Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) make a break from his captors. The event, staged at the historic Chester Cross on Bridge Street, saw Ste escape from a van and pass a note to onlookers before being bundled back inside.
Street theatre and multi-platform clues
The spectacle was promoted through a social media event, with Hollyoaks encouraging fans to follow clues leading to the Chester location. Alongside Ste's escape, attendees saw the McQueens caught up in wedding drama and a busking performance from Kathleen-Angel and Maddox. The story travelled from linear broadcast into street theatre, with content extensions across TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.
Wednesday's episode had shown the van containing Ste driven off from its original site, and a social clip later revealed the captors had headed into Chester, close to where the fictional village of Hollyoaks is set. Ste was spotted by the crowd, escaping and handing a note with a clue to his whereabouts before being forced back into the van.
Blurring reality and fiction
The upcoming episode, due to air on Monday October 5, will blur the lines between reality, theatre and fiction. Executive producer Hannah Cheers said the idea was created with series producer Si Wall after a visit to Edinburgh Fringe.
Cheers said: 'We always think and talk about how we can innovate and tell a story differently and, in this instance, take a traditional mystery and bring it to life in a completely different way.' She added: 'We wondered, how we would feel, if we were sat down on a rainy day in our favourite café and one of our most-loved characters stumbled out, emerging into our world. The disappearance grew from there, knowing the live event would be at an intergral point within that story. In 2026 people want connection and Hollyoaks can still do that.'
Channel 4 commissioner Lucy Raffety said: 'This was a fabulously creative and ambitious idea, brilliantly executed with zeal and passion by the Hollyoaks team, delivering original, memorable and innovative drama, as only Hollyoaks does.'
