Newcastle fans slam re-recorded Blaydon Races anthem

Newcastle United have released a re-recording of the iconic anthem Blaydon Races, prompting a backlash from supporters who described the new version as “the worst thing I’ve ever heard.” The song has long been a matchday staple at St James’ Park and a key symbol of North East culture.

The club’s new recording brings together local musicians and music experts, with input from fan groups. Newcastle shared the video on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “This is The Blaydon Races. Today we are proud to officially release a new recording of our city’s iconic anthem - bringing together supporters, local musicians and regional music experts to ensure the cherished song continues to unite future generations of fans.”

Fans criticise tempo change

Supporters took to the comments section to share their thoughts, with several unhappy about an apparent change in tempo. “Might be the worst thing I’ve ever heard well done to all involved,” one fan said. “Terrible. Should be concentrating more on recruitment and player performance,” a second added.

A third commented: “Great stuff. I've totally forgotten about getting pumped 4-1 two away games in a row now.” A fourth said: “That’s getting nobody up for a battle. Sounds like a nursery rhyme.”

Mixed reactions from supporters

Another fan wrote: “Sorry but No. How is supposed to get crowd going at the start of the game? The Team are already disheartened and your going to play that slow song we might aswell accept defeat.” A sixth added: “Not sure which match-going fans thought this slow, funeral march, version of the song would fire up the crowd and atmosphere. A good take on the song in its own right, but 100% not for for pre-match noise generation!”

There was also some positive reaction. “Class, I think this works perfectly if done correctly on match day!” one supporter said. “Much better than the rubbish version that was being played. Maybe if people give it a chance and sign it how used to be sang and not 100mph with incorrect words,” a second added.

A third said: “Love it to be fair. Far better than god awful version that rings around the stadium at the moment.”

First play before Aston Villa clash

The new release will be heard at St James’ Park for the first time ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa. The song will be performed pre-match by North Shields band Hector Gannet.
