MAFS Retreat Descends into 'Absolute War Zone' as Couples Clash
The Married At First Sight couples retreat, intended as a peaceful opportunity for cast members to mend fractured relationships, rapidly deteriorated into what groom Filip Gregov vividly describes as an 'absolute war zone'. In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail, Filip and his partner Stella Mickunaite have lifted the lid on the chaotic week that left numerous relationships hanging by a thread.
Initial Calm Before the Storm
According to Filip, the tension did not erupt immediately upon arrival. In fact, the cast initially appeared to set aside their differences during a rare moment of harmony on the very first evening. 'We had pizza the very first night and everyone had quashed their things,' he explained. 'Bec was getting along with Gia. Alissa and Gia made up. Everyone was hanging around the pizza ovens having a good feed. The vibe was good and everyone was communicating.'
Controversial Remark Sparks Division
However, this fleeting calm proved short-lived. Filip revealed that a controversial finger-biting remark made by Bec early in the trip ignited a chain reaction that swiftly divided the entire group. 'That throwaway comment - look, in hindsight it was pretty poor taste,' he stated. 'The way it was done and laughing about it after… it wasn't the best. That literally just set up epic division from then on.'
Over the subsequent days, alliances formed and tensions escalated dramatically as the retreat spiralled into utter chaos. 'Bec and Danny were isolated. Rachel was not in a good place. It just took over the whole retreat,' Filip added, painting a picture of a deeply fractured environment.
Emotional Toll and Lack of Privacy
While the intense drama engulfed many of the other couples, Filip and Stella largely managed to keep their own relationship intact. Nevertheless, Stella admits the relentless pressure of filming and the constant surrounding tension made the experience profoundly emotionally draining. 'It wasn't nice. The retreat felt really draining and exhausting,' she confessed.
Despite their strong connection, Stella revealed that the high-pressure environment triggered personal insecurities. 'Two hearts are on the line and my fears of abandonment started to creep up,' she said. She highlighted the immense challenges of the filming conditions: 'You don't have a switch button while you're there. You're always miked, always filmed. There's no time to wind down or gather your thoughts.'
The complete lack of privacy also proved exceptionally difficult for the participants. 'You're basically rubbing shoulders with people the whole time. You don't have privacy at all,' Stella explained. 'You can't run away, you can't hide. Everything just feels very contained.'
Strategies for Survival
To protect their relationship from the surrounding turmoil, the couple made a deliberate and conscious effort to carve out precious time alone. 'We would wake up quite early just to have a little bit of peace and quiet for ourselves,' Filip shared. 'We protect our time and our energy. We always have each other's back.'
Stella agreed wholeheartedly, emphasising that open and honest communication was the fundamental key to maintaining their bond while other couples imploded around them. 'There's no conversation that we don't have,' she asserted. 'I'm very vocal about talking about things that are on my mind straight away.'
Ripple Effects and Lasting Consequences
Filip hinted that the retreat would have serious and lasting consequences for the wider group dynamic. According to him, the conflict between several brides soon spilled over into the men's friendships. 'The guys were always at arm's length from the drama,' he noted. 'But the retreat definitely brought it out. You'll see more of that between Scott and Danny.'
He believes the growing divisions among the women effectively forced the grooms to take sides, creating a fraught atmosphere. 'Both women are strong in their convictions and want to feel chosen,' he explained. 'Everyone needs to know their place. That was the vibe.'
Despite the ongoing drama, Filip insisted the critical mistake many couples made was focusing excessively on the external chaos instead of nurturing their own relationships. 'Anyone inviting other people into their relationship - that's where the anxiety and all the BS comes from,' he said bluntly. 'That's literally what you're seeing on TV.'
A Relationship That Grew Stronger
For Filip and Stella, however, their connection has only intensified and grown stronger throughout the turbulent experiment. Filip admitted the rapid pace of their relationship development surprised even him. 'This is the quickest I've ever fallen for someone,' he revealed. 'Normally it takes me a lot longer, but because of the experiment and everything we've been through, it felt natural.'
Stella believes the unique and pressured environment of the show simply accelerated feelings that might otherwise have taken many months to develop under normal circumstances. 'When two people are ready and they see life and values in the same way, it happens quickly,' she reflected. 'Falling in love is the easy part. Staying and building that deep foundation - that's the hard bit.'
The pair also enjoyed a brief, welcome escape from the retreat's tension when producers organised a day trip to the beach—a rare moment of calm amidst the storm. 'That was actually really funny,' Filip laughed, recalling how onlookers mistook them due to their age difference. Even in fleeting moments of levity, the intense pressure of the MAFS experiment remained an ever-present force.
