Sex columnist Sydney Summers has revealed how she interrupted sex to watch Practical Magic with her terrified boyfriend, who thought she had 'gone to the dark side'.
In her latest column for Metro, Summers described how she and her boyfriend Jude* had just gone to bed when she climbed on top of him, kissing him passionately, before bursting into laughter over her best Sandra Bullock impression.
He did not laugh. Instead, he stared at her, confused, mouthing 'what the-' as he watched her giggling. She sat up, smiled widely and chanted: 'Eye of newt, toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog'. He jumped out of bed, yelping and screaming 'what is wrong with you?'
Boyfriend's Fear of Witchcraft
Summers realised her boyfriend had not seen the 1998 fantasy romantic comedy Practical Magic, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, and thought his girlfriend had gone completely bananas.
Earlier that evening, she had invited friends around for a movie and gossip session while Jude went to a family meal. The group of five sat down to watch Practical Magic, having previously re-watched The Craft and The Witches of Eastwick. They decided to start their own coven, wearing matching necklaces and tracking their lunar phases, though they had little interest in actual witchcraft.
Jude overheard them coming up with names for their coven and warned them: 'You shouldn't mess with all that stuff'. They laughed it off, and Summers patted his butt as she sent him on his way.
Quoting the Film in Bed
After drinking and watching the film, Summers was feeling frisky when Jude came home. As she straddled him, quotes from the film were still swirling in her intoxicated mind, blurting out as she giggled. She realised she had terrified Jude, who asked if she had 'gone to the dark side'. He blurted out: 'You're speaking…in tongues!'
She climbed off him, assured him she was fine, not a witch, and was simply quoting a film she thought he had seen. He said: 'I've never seen Practical Magic, sounds stupid.' She responded: 'Absolutely not going to let that happen,' and put on the film for the second time that night.
Jude watched the whole thing, nudging her awake as she drooled on the pillow. His first question was: 'Will you try and curse me?' She assured him she wouldn't, saying: 'Practical Magic isn't a documentary you know, I can't do any of that stuff'.
Everything eventually returned to normal until the next obsession came along: Bridesmaids. And that was around the time he invited her to no longer live with him.
