Emmerdale: Sarah's 'evil' move shocks fans as Charity arrested

Emmerdale fans were left stunned during Wednesday's (September 9) episode as Sarah Sugden made a bombshell statement to the police, telling them that Charity Dingle "wanted Todd dead". Charity has now been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Sarah's confession and Charity's arrest

The dramatic turn came after Charity's confession that baby Leyla was not Sarah's daughter, but her own. In her anger, Sarah told police that Charity killed Dr Caitlin Todd in cold blood, despite Sarah being the one who pushed the doctor, causing her fatal injury.

Sarah had previously been determined to come clean about the death of Dr Todd, leading to an argument with Charity in the street. Charity admitted she wasn't the saint Sarah thought she was before blurting out the truth about Leyla.

Fan reactions to Sarah's move

Viewers took to social media to share their shock. On X, @swarlavanity wrote: "Sarah has every right to be hurt but framing Charity and telling people she killed Todd in cold blood when Sarah is the one who committed the murder, is going too far."

@claudiaboleyn added: "Oh little Sarah Sugden I was NOT familiar with your game!!!" On Reddit, u/typicalbobcat1088 penned: "Sarah framing Charity for murder is so interesting to me." u/ohsayyoucanrock agreed: "Sarah going scorched earth is kind of great. Charity absolutely deserves punishment for what she's done - is this too far? Yes, but it makes for great telly."

What led to this point

The storyline began when Charity offered to become a surrogate for Sarah, who had been diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia. Sarah and Jacob later married as they celebrated Charity's pregnancy, but viewers knew Charity had fallen pregnant after a one-night stand with Ross Barton.

Dr Caitlin Todd discovered that Jacob wasn't Leyla's father and began taunting Charity with the information. When Sarah confronted Dr Todd, she pushed her, causing the doctor to hit her head and die. After Charity called the police and claimed she had accidentally killed someone, the truth unravelled, leading to Sarah's shocking statement.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX and YouTube from 7am.
