Corrie trailer teases Sarah Platt's murder trial fate

Coronation Street has released a dramatic new trailer teasing what is to come for Sarah Platt as the legendary soap character faces trial for the murder of Theo Silverton.

Earlier this year, the factory supervisor was revealed to have killed Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) during an angry confrontation on top of the scaffolder's yard roof. At the time, he had been abusing her best friend, Todd Grimshaw, and she sent him falling to his death by hitting him over the head with a metal pole after he threatened her.

Sarah's fate in the jury's hands

Sarah was later charged with murder and has been behind bars ever since. Now, bosses have given fans a glimpse of her fate as the jury decides whether she is guilty. Elsewhere in the sneak peek, Gary Windass, who helped Sarah cover up her crime by hiding the weapon, is seen insisting that her actions were in self-defence.

Tina O'Brien, who has played Sarah since 1999, said: “Sarah is absolutely terrified, she has been desperate for this day to come, but the reality of being brought up from the cells and standing in the dock is overwhelming. As the prosecution's case is laid out, she is not sure things will go her way.”

Dramatic episodes and fan reactions

The dramatic episodes will air from Wednesday, October 14th on ITV, ITVX, STV and YouTube.

When Tina was first cast as Sarah, she was central to a controversial teenage pregnancy storyline and over the years, her character has been kidnapped several times and her stepfather, who turned out to be a serial killer, infamously tried to drown her and the rest of the family by driving them all into a canal. Since returning in 2015, Sarah has been married and divorced, and got away with covering up the murder of her drug dealer ex, Callum Logan, who was killed by her now-deceased sister-in-law, Kylie.

With such a history with the programme, fans previously expressed their doubt that a lengthy prison sentence would be the kind of exit Sarah would receive and are sure that there must be another twist coming to keep her on the cobbles.

Taking to X, one fan said: "Maybe if Kit stopped trying to frame Gary with zero evidence and stopped trying to intercept evidence implicating Sarah, people would stop believing he's covering for her." Another said: "As usual. How many murders will that be for Sarah? Soaps are so repulsive when it comes to morality," whilst a third wrote: "How is Sarah still staying in the show?! Surely there’s some twist coming that shows he wasn’t actually dead? I don’t see how they’d keep her in and we know she’s renewed the contract so she’s definitely not leaving!"

Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
