Coronation Street fans are convinced that Kirk Sutherland is set to find love with cobbles legend Mary Taylor, sparking speculation about a fresh romantic storyline on the ITV soap.
Kirk, played by Andy Whyment, first appeared on the long-running programme in 2000 as the brother of Maria Connor, portrayed by Samia Longchambon. He quickly won over audiences with his witty remarks and endearing nature.
Throughout his time in Weatherfield, Kirk has featured in numerous major storylines, from his tumultuous relationship with Fiz Brown, played by Jennie McAlpine, to discovering romance with Beth Tinker, portrayed by Lisa George, which ultimately came to an end. His romantic endeavours have not been straightforward recently, as he has yet to find a new partner following Beth's exit in 2024.
Fans back a Kirk and Mary pairing
Fans are now speculating about a potential romance between Kirk and fellow cobbles resident Mary Taylor, played by Patti Clare. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one person said: "Who else thinks Kirk and Mary would make a lovely couple? What's your opinion on this."
Fellow fans expressed agreement, as someone else penned: "Yessssssssss as daft as each other." A third chimed in: "Definitely." Another wrote: "Yes I do." Echoing their thoughts, a fifth said: "lol that could be entertaining hahaha."
Mary's long-running soap career
Mary has remained a fixture on the soap since 2008 and was initially only scheduled to feature in five episodes. Nevertheless, actress Patti secured a contract to continue portraying Mary and has subsequently become one of the show's most beloved and memorable characters.
As the cherished Preston's Petals florist, she has been central to numerous major storylines, from her multiple unsuccessful relationships to the devastating revelation that she had a son at just fourteen years old. Patti's portrayal of Mary has earned her multiple awards and nominations, including Best Comedy Performance on three occasions at the British Soap Awards, securing the honour in 2011, 2013 and 2016.
