A Place in the Sun viewers fume at £290k offer rejection

Viewers of A Place in the Sun were left less than impressed after buyers Helen and Kevin had their £290,000 offer on a property in Spain rejected, with some branding it a “joke”.

Couple's search in Roquetas de Mar

During a repeat episode of the Channel 4 programme aired on Monday, 17 August, Helen and Kevin were hoping to find a holiday home in the seaside town of Roquetas de Mar. They viewed five properties with presenter Lee Juggurnauth but were only impressed by one, a top-floor apartment with lift access, which they failed to secure.

The couple, who met in Spain over 20 years ago, had a budget of £300,000 but were willing to stretch to £330,000. They were looking for a bungalow with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, but the apartment they liked was listed at around £330,000.

Offer and counter-offer

Helen explained their initial offer, saying: “We're going to be putting in an offer, unfortunately it's going to be a bit lower than the asking price. That's primarily because even though we love the apartment, there's still a lot of things there that we wish to do, like open planning the kitchen, that's going to cost a bit of money.”

Their offer of £290,000 was turned down, and the sellers countered with just under £321,500. Helen said: “I don't think we're prepared to go up to that just yet, are we?” before making a final offer of £300,000, which was also rejected.

Viewers react

Viewers were stunned by the couple's approach. One said: “Cheeky offer - shock! Pair of chancers.” Another called it a “joke offer”, while someone else fumed: “£290K is taking the p**s,” to which another agreed: “Massively!”

One viewer questioned: “Who in their right mind wants to spend £300K on buying a property in an area they have never been to before?” Another wrote: “We want to change the apartment to meet our needs but we dont want to pay for it ourselves. We want the vendors to pay for it.”

A Place in the Sun is available to watch on Channel 4.
