BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has said he does not want to be shown the door after making an error while presenting his programme. The 52-year-old, who has been with the broadcaster for several years, made the comment during his show on Tuesday, October 27, while speaking to co-host and travel reporter Ellie Brennan.
On-air exchange with Ellie Brennan
Addressing Ellie, Vernon said: “So she’s here, you’ve heard the dulcet tones of the lady with the travel.” Ellie responded: “Don’t say that with a straight face.”
In reply, Vernon said: “Well after what I said about the layby lady I have to be careful you see. Called you all sorts and I like this job I really love it. I don’t want to be shown the door. Oh there you go.”
Previous gaffe on October 20
The moment Vernon may have been referring to occurred earlier this month when he made an on-air gaffe. On October 20, he introduced Ellie as “Lady of the Lanes” before attempting to come up with more nicknames.
Ellie hinted that Vernon was trying to buy himself more time before he continued: “Can you hear the cogs? The Queen of the Carriageway, yeah, the Heroine of the Highway.” A colleague then suggested: “The Duchess of the Dual Carriageway.”
After this exchange, Vernon said they had decided to bin off “Lady of the Layby”. Soon after, as Ellie began her traffic report, Vernon jumped in and suggested “The Harlot of the Hard-shoulder” before realising he should not have said that word on live radio.
Correction after Google search
Following this, he gave the term a quick Google and corrected his mistake, admitting it had been the wrong thing to say. He added: “I've just given it a Google. Yeah, it's not what I thought it meant. Yeah, education is key.
“You learn something every day. Wow, that's definitely not you. Accidental Partridge are having a field day right now. I know; now, I've just given it a Google, I'm like, 'Oh no, it's quite offensive'. Watch your facts, please.”
