Carrie Romney, the sister-in-law of former US senator Mitt Romney, was found dead on Friday near a parking garage in Valencia, California. The 64-year-old either fell or jumped, and authorities have stated that foul play does not appear to be a factor in the early stages of the investigation.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner's office has listed her cause of death as 'deferred' pending toxicology results, which could take months. Her body was discovered at about 8.30am near a shopping centre parking garage, and her car was spotted at the five-level structure.
Carrie Romney married Mitt Romney's older brother, George 'Scott' Romney, in November 2016. Scott Romney, 84, a prominent Michigan attorney and father of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna Romney McDaniel, had filed for divorce from Carrie in June after eight years of marriage.
Mitt Romney, who served as Massachusetts governor and later as a US senator for Utah, released a statement saying: 'Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.'
