Harry Potter Star Paapa Essiedu Confronts Death Threats Over Snape Role
Paapa Essiedu, the actor cast as Severus Snape in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter television series, has publicly revealed the severe racist abuse and death threats he has endured since his casting announcement. The 35-year-old star, currently filming in Watford for the 2027 release, detailed the disturbing messages in a recent interview with The Sunday Times.
Racist Trolls and Violent Threats
Essiedu explained that online trolls have targeted him with explicit death threats, including messages stating, 'Quit or I'll murder you'. These individuals argue that a black man should not portray the fictional wizard character, originally played by Alan Rickman in the film adaptations starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.
'The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, 'I'm going to come to your house and kill you,'' Essiedu told the publication. He emphasised that no one should face such harassment for simply doing their job, noting that while many professions involve life-threatening risks, his role involves playing a wizard in a fantasy series.
Emotional Impact and Personal Motivation
Despite the emotional toll, Essiedu stated that the abuse fuels his determination to make the character his own. 'I'd be lying if I said it doesn't affect me emotionally. But the abuse fuels me,' he said. Reflecting on his childhood imagination of Hogwarts, he added that representation matters deeply, motivating him to not be intimidated and to inspire young fans who see themselves in his portrayal.
Interestingly, Essiedu has chosen not to report the threatening messages, believing that seeing perpetrators punished would not improve his wellbeing.
Background and Contrasting Views with J.K. Rowling
The interview also explored Essiedu's personal history, including attending a school in east London where racism, misogyny, and homophobia were prevalent. He openly discussed his support for trans rights, which contrasts sharply with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's gender-critical views.
Last year, Essiedu signed an open letter challenging a Supreme Court ruling that defined 'woman' and 'sex' in biological terms—a decision Rowling celebrated. This led to calls for his removal from the Snape role, but he stands by his stance, asserting that 'artists in the trans community have a right to be treated with dignity'.
Industry Backlash and Parallels with John Lithgow
Essiedu's experience mirrors that of fellow actor John Lithgow, who recently revealed he almost withdrew from playing Albus Dumbledore in the same series due to fan backlash over Rowling's trans views. Lithgow, 80, faced criticism from fans and former co-stars, including non-binary actor Aud Mason-Hyde, who described his casting as 'hurtful and difficult'.
In interviews, Lithgow insisted he does not agree with Rowling's perspectives, calling them 'ironic and inexplicable', and emphasised that the Harry Potter story promotes tolerance over bigotry. He noted that Rowling is not heavily involved in the series production, despite serving as an executive producer.
Both actors highlight the ongoing tensions within the Harry Potter franchise, where casting decisions and personal beliefs intersect with fan expectations and social issues. As filming continues, Essiedu remains committed to his role, driven by a passion for representation and resilience against abuse.
