Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson has issued a desperate public appeal for assistance after her vehicle was stolen from her driveway in the early hours, with critical hospital equipment for her twin daughters inside. The 34-year-old artist took to Instagram to plead for information, revealing that the black Defender with registration plate JJ73SSY was taken from her home in Brentwood, Essex.
Essential Medical Gear for Twins with Rare Condition
Nelson explained that the car contained a significant amount of hospital equipment urgently required by her twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson. Both girls have been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting. The NHS describes SMA as leading to movement problems, breathing and swallowing difficulties, muscle tremors, and bone and joint issues.
"I have so much of my girls' hospital equipment in that car that's really needed," Nelson stated in her emotional social media post. She later updated her followers to announce a substantial £10,000 reward for anyone providing information leading to the vehicle's recovery.
Campaigning for Early SMA Detection
This distressing incident occurs against the backdrop of Nelson's recent activism work surrounding spinal muscular atrophy. Following her twins' diagnosis, the singer launched a petition calling for SMA to be included in the newborn blood spot screening test, commonly known as the heel-prick test. This initiative has gathered remarkable momentum, amassing over 100,000 signatures from supporters.
Nelson's advocacy efforts have already yielded tangible results. Earlier this month, she expressed pride that SMA screenings would be introduced in the UK from October 2026, rather than the originally planned January 2027 start date. This acceleration represents a significant victory for the SMA community.
Meeting with Health Secretary and Charity Work
In January, Nelson met with Health Secretary Wes Streeting to discuss the life-changing impact that early detection could have had on her daughters' prognosis. She emphasized that with their diagnosis, her twins are unlikely to ever walk or regain neck strength. The following month, she became a patron of the charity SMA UK, further cementing her commitment to raising awareness.
Reflecting on her activism, Nelson told the Press Association: "It has caused a lot of commotion and it's been amazing because the SMA community have been screaming and shouting about this for years, and it's never been taken seriously."
Documented Pregnancy Struggles
Nelson's journey to motherhood has been particularly challenging. During her pregnancy, she experienced twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a condition where abnormal blood vessels in the placenta cause imbalanced blood flow between twins. These difficulties were documented in her six-part Prime Video documentary series, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix.
Essex Police have been contacted regarding the theft investigation, though no official statement has been released at this time. The singer's appeal continues to circulate across social media platforms as concerned followers share her message in hopes of locating the stolen vehicle and its vital medical contents.
