ITV's True Crime Documentary Details Obsessive Flatmate's Chilling Murder

A compelling and powerful true crime documentary is set to premiere on ITV tonight, delving into the real-life story of Stephanie Hansen, a woman murdered by her obsessed flatmate. The programme, titled WhatsApp Obsession: The Murder of Stephanie Hansen, airs at 9pm on March 24, offering viewers an in-depth look at the events leading up to the tragic killing in 2022.

The Tragic Case of Stephanie Hansen

Stephanie Hansen, aged 39, was stabbed to death in her west London home. Her housemate, Sheldon Rodrigues, initially appeared devastated, but he was concealing a sinister secret that would later unravel the murder case. ITV has teased that behind Rodrigues' facade lay a chilling obsession. In the months before Stephanie's death, he planted secret cameras and recording devices in their shared home and bombarded her with coercive WhatsApp messages.

When Stephanie began a new relationship, Rodrigues' obsession turned deadly. He killed her in Hayes, London, after she rejected his advances following seven years of fixation. Shockingly, he even offered to undergo surgery to change his appearance in an attempt to win her affection.

Hidden Surveillance and the Attack

Rodrigues launched into a violent attack after learning through a hidden listening device that Stephanie had a partner. He had concealed audio recorders in a television to track her movements and spy on her conversations. During the trial, jurors were informed that Rodrigues spent 158 hours listening back to the audio he had captured of Stephanie.

Upon overhearing that her boyfriend had visited the house while Rodrigues was working a night shift for a cargo firm near Heathrow airport, he returned and assaulted Stephanie in her bedroom. She sustained 60 distinct injuries, including knife wounds to her neck and trauma inflicted by a hairdryer and a large pan.

The Chilling 999 Call and Conviction

As part of the documentary, a chilling 999 call will be featured, in which Rodrigues is heard telling operators: 'Can you help me please? I've just found my housemate dead.' Rodrigues denied the murder charges, insisting that he had installed the recording equipment for Stephanie's safety.

However, in 2024, he was convicted of murdering Stephanie and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years. This case highlights the dangers of obsessive behaviour and the devastating consequences it can have.

ITV's Broader True Crime Focus

This documentary comes as ITV continues to explore gripping true crime stories. Recently, the network released a first look at their new drama series, Believe Me, which tells the story of John Worboys, known as the 'Black Cab Rapist'. The drama focuses on how the victims of this prolific sex attacker were failed by the system, with the Metropolitan Police neglecting to investigate allegations thoroughly.

Written by Jeff Pope and expected to air later this spring, Believe Me features a cast including Daniel Mays as Worboys, Aimée-Ffion Edwards, and Aasiya Shah as victims. It also includes Carrie Johnson's ordeal, portrayed by Miriam Petche, recalling a harrowing incident from 2007 when she was spiked in Worboys' taxi at age 19.

Mrs Johnson has expressed hope that the drama serves as a wake-up call to authorities, emphasizing that women and girls are often failed by institutions meant to protect them. Worboys was convicted in 2009 for attacks on 12 women and again in 2019 for further offences, following public outcry over a parole board ruling.

WhatsApp Obsession: The Murder of Stephanie Hansen will air on ITV and ITVX tonight at 9pm, providing a stark reminder of the real-life horrors behind true crime narratives.
