Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's anticipated visit to the UK has sparked renewed discussion, with one royal expert suggesting the pair are determined to convey a distinct message to American audiences. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to journey to Britain next week for occasions commemorating the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games in Birmingham, though questions persist regarding security provisions and accommodation for the family.
Optics and American Perception
Discussing the trip on The Sun's Royal Exclusive, TalkTV presenter Samara Gill indicated the appearance of the visit could prove meaningful and that the Sussexes will be anxious to demonstrate to Americans they have received a warm reception from the royal family. She stated: "I think it is very interesting that they might stay at Buckingham Palace. I think that's all about optics for them. I think they want to be seen, at least from the American side, that they're going there, they're being welcomed back into the royal family."
"They're able to then cachet in on that brand and bring it back to the States, and continue what they're doing with this one foot in, one foot out royal life that, may I remind you, the Queen did not want to happen," Gill added, referencing the late Queen Elizabeth II's reported wishes.
Harry's Commitment to Invictus Games
Meanwhile, The Sun's royal correspondent Sarah Hewson stated the visit itself ought not to be unexpected, considering Harry's enduring dedication to the Invictus Games. Sarah elaborated: "The reason they're coming back is because it's the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games. They're going to be attending this event."
"We do usually see Meghan on board for these events to support Harry in what is, you know, his greatest project. And so, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that she's taking part in this event," Hewson added. She also indicated the journey could assist continuing attempts to mend family relationships, suggesting it "makes sense... in terms of being able to further that sort of reconciliation which has already begun behind closed doors."
Security and Family Concerns
The remarks emerge as Harry pursues efforts to obtain appropriate protection for Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, throughout the five-day visit. The duke had anticipated his wife and children would join him, though he remains awaiting the result of an assessment by the Risk Management Board as part of the procedure employed by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) to evaluate his security provisions.
A spokesman for Harry stated: "The duke continues to explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely and to give his children the opportunity to enjoy the UK." Although Archie and Lilibet are not anticipated to take part in public engagements, Meghan is set to join Harry on visits to the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London and an Invictus event at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
Possible Royal Reunion
There is also optimism that King Charles III could be reunited with his youngest grandchildren for the first time in four years. The King has reportedly extended an offer of accommodation at a royal residence to the Sussexes, though it is understood the proposal has yet to be formally accepted.
