Amy Winehouse's Ex-Husband May Be Unaware of Mother of His Children's Death

Blake Fielder-Civil, the troubled ex-husband of late singer Amy Winehouse, may not even know that the mother of his two children has recently died, according to his own mother. Georgette Fielder-Civil has expressed fears that her son's chaotic lifestyle and isolation from his fragmented family mean he might remain unaware of the passing of Sarah Aspin, aged 47.

Unexplained Death in Leeds

Sarah Aspin was found dead at her council maisonette in the Swillington area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, on Saturday morning. Her death is currently being treated as unexplained by West Yorkshire Police, who were called to the property following a concern-for-safety report at 6.38am. Paramedics treated her at the scene, but she was pronounced dead a short time later. A man found at the property was arrested for an offence not related to her death.

Georgette Fielder-Civil said she was 'absolutely devastated' by the news but feared her son might not know. 'It's absolutely tragic - truly tragic. I would have thought Blake doesn't know,' she stated. She added, 'Sarah spent a considerable amount of time at my house. To me, she was just Sarah. My heart goes out to her mum. It really does.'

Life of Tragedy and Addiction

Blake Fielder-Civil, aged 43, has a life blighted by years of drug addiction, prison spells, and personal tragedy. He was married to Amy Winehouse from 2007 to 2009 and has previously admitted introducing the singer to heroin for the first time. Many fans blame him for her descent into drink and drugs before her untimely death in 2011 at age 27.

Currently, Fielder-Civil is living in a small bedsit in graffiti-covered converted flats in the Headingley area of Leeds. Neighbours claim the block is well frequented by drug users, with the smell of cannabis regularly hanging in the air. Locals describe the area, in the city's student heartland, as blighted by addicts, though they say Fielder-Civil himself keeps a low profile. One neighbour noted, 'Blakey is alright, he keeps himself to himself. But from what happened with Amy, and where she took him, to where he is now. It's crazy. He keeps his head down. He's not an issue.'

Complex Relationships and Family History

Sarah Aspin first met Fielder-Civil during a spell in rehab in 2009, while he continued his on-off relationship with Winehouse into 2010. The couple welcomed son Jack in May 2011, followed by daughter Lola-Rose in April 2013, though their relationship was overshadowed by his tangled love life. Both children were later adopted, and the couple reportedly split in 2018.

Ms Aspin, who was also said to have struggled with addiction, revealed in 2011 that she visited Fielder-Civil at HMP Leeds shortly after Amy's death, where he was serving a jail sentence for burglary. She said at the time, 'He is devastated and shattered. He just can't take it in that she's dead and he'll never see her again.' She described their relationship as one where 'they couldn't live with each other and they could not live without each other.'

Further Tragedies in the Family

The deaths of Amy Winehouse and Sarah Aspin are not the only tragedies to have haunted Fielder-Civil's life. In April 2021, his younger brother Freddie, aged 27, died from a heroin overdose after absconding from a mental health unit and checking into a B&B in Leeds. His mother has spent years fighting for answers over his death.

Fielder-Civil himself has battled addiction for years and reportedly overdosed in 2012 after discovering messages sent by Winehouse shortly before her death. Referring to the repeated losses, Mrs Fielder-Civil said, 'Too many people we loved and adored have died. It's tragic - absolutely tragic.' She added about Sarah Aspin, 'I know she had her troubles. I'm absolutely heartbroken that she never dealt with the demons.'

Tributes and Ongoing Investigation

Following Ms Aspin's death, her eldest daughter, Melody-Rose Hampshire, paid a tearful tribute on social media, describing her as her 'beautiful mum' and saying life would be 'so boring' without her. Sharing childhood pictures and videos, she wrote, 'Love and miss you forever and always mum. Rest in eternal peace. Life is going to be boring without you in it.' In another post, she added, 'No words at all. love you so much mum. May you rest in eternal peace, my beautiful mum. Doesn't seem real. I just want you here and speak to you about your crazy antics.'

West Yorkshire Police continue to investigate the unexplained death, with officers conducting enquiries at the property. The community remains in shock as details of this tragic story unfold, highlighting the ongoing struggles and losses connected to Blake Fielder-Civil's troubled life.
