Zayn Malik, the former One Direction star, is preparing for a worldwide tour starting in Manchester next month, but his path has been marked by anxiety, anger, and fractured friendships. A recent hospitalisation forced him to cancel appearances, including a TV slot, as he promotes his fifth album, KONNAKOL. Sharing a photo from his hospital bed, he thanked his medical team and apologised to fans.
Malik has long struggled with anxiety, which previously caused him to cancel performances during his One Direction days. He has also spoken about an eating disorder he developed under the intense pressure of fame. Tensions with former bandmate Louis Tomlinson persist, reportedly escalating to a physical altercation while filming a Netflix travel series.
Reflecting on his growth, Malik told The Zach Sang Show: 'I've abandoned my brash arrogance. You don't always have to be right. That inner voice… it chills out as you get older.' Born in Bradford to a British-Pakistani family, he originally auditioned for The X Factor in 2010 as a solo artist but was grouped with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne to form One Direction.
Simon Cowell later called Malik 'an exceptional talent,' but choreographer Katie Wazel recalled his frustration during rehearsals: 'Zayn found some of the routines tough… he'd get frustrated and sometimes just walk off to take a breather.' In 2015, Malik left the band mid-tour, citing stress, and later admitted: 'We'd got sick of each other… we had run our course.'
Despite the setbacks, Malik continues to pursue music on his own terms, with his upcoming tour and album marking another chapter in his turbulent career.
