Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora Mourns Mother Joan, 89, Days Before 90th Birthday
Richie Sambora's Mother Dies at 89 in New Jersey

Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora is mourning the heartbreaking loss of his mother, Joan Sambora, who passed away just four days before her 90th birthday.

A Devoted Son's Final Years

Joan Sambora died at her home in New Jersey on Sunday, January 11, as confirmed by People magazine. The 66-year-old rock star had been residing with her in recent years to provide dedicated care. A source close to the family revealed that Sambora and his 28-year-old daughter, Ava, have been left 'heartbroken' by her passing.

Born in 1936, Joan was a constant supportive presence at her son's events throughout his illustrious music career. Her death follows that of her husband, Adam Sambora, who died from lung cancer in 2007. Richie, their only son, demonstrated profound devotion as her health declined.

Providing Round-the-Clock Care

In 2024, it was reported that Sambora had flown back to his home state to be by his mother's side after she suffered a series of falls. One fall resulted in significant injuries, including a broken hip, requiring a period of rehabilitation. Committed to her comfort, Sambora renovated her entire house, buying smaller furniture to make it easier for her to navigate, and arranged for 24/7 care at home because she did not wish to stay in hospital.

'He's an only child and a devoted son. They're first-generation immigrants, so family is very important to him,' a source told People.

Family, Legacy, and Band History

Joan occasionally appeared on her son's social media and shared red-carpet moments with him, such as at the 12th Annual Golden Heart Awards in Beverly Hills in 2012 alongside Ava and actress Denise Richards.

Sambora's commitment to family previously influenced his major career decisions. He was the lead guitarist for Bon Jovi from 1983 until his abrupt departure in 2013. In a 2020 interview, he cited a 'dire situation' with his family, specifically the need to focus on raising his daughter Ava, as the reason for leaving. 'I don't regret leaving the situation, but I regret how I did it,' he later reflected in a 2024 Hulu documentary.

While there had been speculation about a reunion for the band's 2024 'Forever Tour', it was confirmed that Sambora would not be participating. The musician, however, has stated he holds 'no malice' towards the band and would not rule out a return under the right circumstances.

The passing of Joan Sambora marks the end of a chapter for the rock legend, underscoring the personal sacrifices and deep family bonds that have shaped his life beyond the stage.
