Noel Gallagher Still Unsure What Champagne Supernova Lyrics Mean
Noel Gallagher Unsure What Champagne Supernova Means

Noel Gallagher has confessed that he still has no idea what some of the lyrics to Oasis's hit Champagne Supernova mean, even as the song has gained new significance for a younger generation of fans.

The 59-year-old Britpop star appeared on the final season of Amelia Dimoldenberg's Chicken Shop Date, where the presenter interviews celebrity guests in the format of a date.

When asked whether there was a song he had written that had changed in meaning over time, Gallagher singled out the 1995 Oasis classic.

Nonsensical in the 90s, Meaningful Now

“Champagne Supernova is one of the ones, because it was nonsensical in the 90s, and then it's taken on more meaning for a new generation,” he said.

Despite the song becoming one of Oasis's most enduring anthems, Gallagher admitted he still struggles to explain one of its most memorable lines.

“I mean, I still have no idea what 'slowly walking down the hall faster than a cannonball' means,” he told Dimoldenberg.

When Amelia suggested it meant someone was walking quite fast, Gallagher replied: “It's a drug reference.”

Oasis Reunion and Tour

Released in 1995 on Oasis's second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, Champagne Supernova became one of the band's defining songs, closing the record with its sprawling sound and surreal lyrics.

His appearance on Chicken Shop Date also saw him discuss the Oasis reunion, family life and his friendship with Beatles legend Paul McCartney.

Reflecting on the decision to bring Oasis back, Gallagher said the band quickly realised during rehearsals that the comeback could live up to expectations.

“You can't make sure, you just got to hope that you can do whatever it is you're trying to do as well as you want to do it,” he said.

“In the case of Oasis, it became apparent after, maybe a week in rehearsals, that it was going to be as good, if not better, than it ever was.”

The appearance comes ahead of the singer heading back on the road for the Britpop band's Oasis Live '27 tour, following on from the success of their 2025 tour.

The reunion came following a long-standing feud between Liam and Noel after the band split in 2009 – reportedly prompted by a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in France.

The group have had eight UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums, with Wonderwall, Don't Look Back In Anger and Roll With It among their best-known hits.
