Former Spice Girl Melanie 'Mel C' Chisholm has sparked excitement by suggesting a long-awaited reunion of the iconic Britpop girl group could be on the horizon. The 51-year-old singer made the tantalising comments during an interview in Sydney, where she performed on New Year's Eve.
A Legacy to Celebrate in 2026
Speaking to presenter Zan Rowe as part of the ABC's New Year's Eve coverage, Mel C was asked about the Spice Girls' upcoming 30th anniversary in 2026. She expressed immense pride in the group's achievements and legacy. The Spice Girls scored a staggering nine UK number one singles during their peak, creating a phenomenon that continues to resonate.
"I feel really proud of everything that we did," she gushed. "[And of] the legacy that we created - and we find young people all the time discovering the Spice Girls. It's a wonderful thing - I'm so proud to be a Spice Girl and it would be lovely to celebrate that in some way."
Optimism for a Comeback
This is not the first time Mel C has hinted at a return. Last month, during an appearance on Good Morning America, she crossed her fingers and stated she "remains optimistic" about a reunion. She reflected on their successful 2019 stadium tour in the UK, describing it as "incredible."
"We're just so proud of the legacy that we have, and we have fans now from new generations who are just loving the Spice Girls, so I would like to get back on stage with the girls," she explained. "We're talking, and we're seeing what opportunities are out there. The thing that stops us is we feel so precious about it, we want to make sure it's the right thing and agree on the right thing."
From 'Wannabe' to a Lasting Bond
After forming in 1994, the Spice Girls—Melanie Brown (Mel B), Melanie Chisholm (Mel C), Geri Halliwell, Victoria Beckham (née Adams), and Emma Bunton—burst onto the charts in 1996 with the global smash hit Wannabe. They followed this with a string of chart-toppers including Say You'll Be There, Spice Up Your Life, and Who Do You Think You Are.
The bond between the five women remains strong. All five original members attended Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday party last year, where they famously performed their hit Stop for the star-studded guest list, in a moment captured by David Beckham.
Meanwhile, during her Sydney Harbour foreshore performance to usher in 2025, Mel C promised a 'spicy' set, hinting she would include classic Spice Girls tracks. She described being chosen for the prestigious Australian New Year's Eve slot as an "honour," adding she would "pull out all stops" for the show.
