French electronic musician Kavinsky, real name Vincent Belorgey, has died at age 50. His death was reported by French media, with a police source indicating a suspected stroke as the cause. Belorgey had been complaining of headaches in recent days and was found at home after a neighbor alerted emergency services.

President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute, calling him “a source of French pride forever.” Culture minister Catherine Pégard also honored him, stating: “France loses one of its most singular voices. Signed to Record Makers, he released five EPs and two albums. His 2010 track ‘Nightcall’, featuring Brazilian singer Lovefoxxx and co-produced with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, became a global sensation after being used in the opening credits of Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film ‘Drive’. His debut album ‘Outrun’ outlined the fictional Kavinsky alter ego—a young man who crashes a Ferrari Testarossa in the 1980s and returns as a zombie in the 2000s. It reached No. 2 in the French charts. He followed with ‘Reborn’ in 2022. His music, with vintage Ferrari references and a sunglasses-and-bomber-jacket aesthetic, evoked 1980s cinematic synths. In a 2013 interview, he said: “Everyone says, that guy is stuck in the past! I don’t sit around missing things from older times—I’m just from the 80s, and so my influences come from that period. That is what is in my veins.” The Weeknd appeared on a version of Kavinsky’s ‘Odd Look’, and in 2022 Kavinsky said they might work on new music together.
