Kate Garraway has surprised fans by revealing that she dated a famous rock star before settling down with her late husband, Derek Draper. The revelation came during an appearance on Piers Morgan's Life Stories, where she opened up about her past relationships.
A Surprising Love Life Revelation
The 50-year-old Good Morning Britain star joined her former ITV colleague for the talk show, discussing her marriage to Derek and his devastating battle with long-Covid. During the conversation, Garraway shared that Derek was the only boyfriend who never broke up with her. "I've always been dumped. I have never ended a relationship," she admitted.
When Piers probed further, asking how many times she had been dumped, Garraway confessed the number was "in double figures." She joked, "See, if you had known the bar was set so low, you would have had a double crack, wouldn't you?"
The Mystery Rock Star Ex
Piers then questioned Garraway about her 2021 memoir, The Power of Hope, in which she cryptically mentioned dating an actor. When pressed, she clarified, "No, a performer." Piers continued, "A singer? A famous one?" Garraway revealed that her mystery man is a "musician of sorts" who is now famous, but she refused to disclose his identity.
Derek Draper's Battle with Covid
Garraway also spoke about the devastating impact of Covid on her husband, Derek Draper, who was first hospitalized in 2020. He was placed in a medically induced coma to allow his body to recover from the virus, but he did not wake up for several months. By then, the disease had severely damaged his body.
"Covid has devastated him, from the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his heart, his nervous system," Garraway explained.
Derek died in January 2024 at the age of 56 after suffering a cardiac arrest a month earlier. The heart attack caused further complications following the detrimental effects of Covid on his body.
Remembering Derek
Garraway confirmed her husband's death in an Instagram post, writing: "I'm sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days, and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed."
She added: "I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible. Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."
