New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords have sold out their first shows in eight years within minutes of tickets going on sale. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement announced four gigs at the Wellington venue Meow Nui, scheduled to begin next week, marking their first performances since 2018.
The duo, known for their HBO series and songs such as Business Time and Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros, formed in 1998. Tickets for the Wellington shows went on sale on Wednesday and sold out in under 30 minutes, sparking a frenzy among fans.
The performances will serve as a warm-up for the band ahead of the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles in May, where they are set to play two shows. McKenzie told RNZ last month that the pair had been “in hysterics” trying to recall their own material, resorting to watching YouTube clips to relearn their songs.
Many disappointed fans took to social media to express their frustration. One user on the Wellington Facebook page Vic Deals said they were “not above selling an organ or two” to secure tickets, while another offered to “sell a limb”. Some fans are considering gathering outside the venue to hold a listening party instead.
