Naoki Yoshida, the long-time director of Final Fantasy 14, has stated he has never considered retiring. Speaking during a group interview at Final Fantasy Fan Fest Berlin 2026, Yoshida, now 53, addressed his future with the franchise.
No retirement plans
Yoshida noted that he was 37 when he started working on Final Fantasy 14, and 16 years later, the game continues to grow. He said, “I have not once thought about retiring.” However, he added that if Square Enix told him he was no longer needed, he would leave, as he wouldn't feel motivated to work where his skills were not required.
He also stated that as long as players do not ask him to quit, he intends to continue on the title, calling it “my lifework.”
Game design evolution
Yoshida explained that his approach to game design has changed over the years due to players having less leisure time. He described a “time progression battle” where games compete with social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. As a result, the upcoming expansion Evercold, releasing in January 2027, will rework daily challenges to allow weekly completion, accommodating busy schedules.
Yoshida delivered a two-and-a-half-hour keynote at Fan Fest wearing a full set of the new Bastion armour, complete with a breastplate, pauldrons, cloak, and twin cannons, despite the 29°C heat. The crowd reacted enthusiastically, with many queuing to meet him.
Future plans
While Yoshida has no retirement plans, he mentioned a hypothetical scenario: if he ever left Square Enix, at age 60 he could retire in Japan, but he would likely continue developing games with a close-knit team and self-funded projects.
