Star Fox Nintendo Switch 2 Review: Faithful Remake Lacks Surprises
Star Fox Switch 2 Review: Faithful Remake Lacks Surprises

Nintendo's Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 is the third official remake of the 1997 classic Star Fox 64, and while it looks and plays better than ever, it offers few surprises for longtime fans. The game follows Fox McCloud and his team as they battle Emperor Andross across 16 stages, with multiple routes encouraging replayability. However, the core experience remains largely unchanged from the original.

Visual and Control Upgrades

The Switch 2 hardware delivers significant graphical improvements, with detailed character models and planets that bring the Lylat system to life. New fully voiced cutscenes add depth to the story. Controls are responsive, with options including analogue stick, inverted, and a new mouse mode using the Joy-Con 2 that makes aiming more precise. Local co-op allows one player to pilot while another shoots.

Familiar Content for Returning Players

All 16 stages from Star Fox 64 return, with the same alternate routes—such as protecting Falco on Corneria to reach Sector Y. For those who played the original or its 3DS remake, these paths hold no surprises. The single-player campaign can be completed in 45 minutes to an hour, with score-chasing for gold medals adding replay value.

Battle Mode and New Features

The new Battle mode supports local and online multiplayer for two teams of four, with objective-based modes like zone control and cargo collection. It feels old-school but engaging. An AR camera filter lets players adopt character traits. No other major new content is added.

Verdict: A Solid but Unambitious Remake

Star Fox for Switch 2 is a perfectly good remake of a perfectly good space shooter, but it fails to evolve the formula beyond its 30-year-old roots. It's an excellent entry point for new players, but veteran fans may find it leaves much to be desired. Rating: 3/5.
