Kylie Minogue Documentary Trailer: Michael Hutchence and Cancer

Kylie Minogue has offered fans a first glimpse into her life by releasing the Netflix trailer for her upcoming 'intimate' documentary, titled KYLIE, on Instagram on Tuesday. The 57-year-old Australian singer was seen passionately kissing her late ex-boyfriend, INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, in a sweet archive video.

Archival Footage and Emotional Revelations

The couple, who dated between 1989 and 1991, appeared happy as they cosied up in a series of clips. Michael Hutchence passed away at the age of 37 in November 1997. In the trailer, Kylie also fought back tears as she opened up about the fear she experienced during her cancer battle, stating, 'I felt removed from my body, I was so scared of what was ahead of me.'

The three-part series features Kylie's sister, Dannii Minogue, who added, 'We didn't know if she's ever gonna be well again. I just wanted to be with my sister. Music kept us going.' The Loco-Motion hitmaker was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in May 2005 at the age of 36. She underwent a lumpectomy and chemotherapy in Paris and was given the all-clear in 2006.

Career Highlights and Collaborators

The documentary series, created by the team behind the Beckham documentary, explores Kylie's journey to becoming one of pop's biggest stars. The trailer also offers glimpses of her decade-spanning career, from her role as Charlene in Neighbours to behind-the-scenes footage of music videos, photoshoots, and her performance at Glastonbury in 2019. Kylie expressed that she 'hated being boxed in' and loved pushing herself to try new things in music and acting. She said, 'Life makes sense to me on stage and there is certainly no end.'

The trailer also features her collaborator and friend Nick Cave, who said, 'Kylie is this force. It's all outward, giving.' As her hit All The Lovers played over the trailer, Kylie was seen enjoying herself in a series of fun archive clips. The series is set to premiere on Netflix on May 20 and will also include insights from Australian actor and singer Jason Donovan and English record producer Pete Waterman.

Production and Bidding War

Emmy and Bafta award-winning director Michael Harte is at the helm, with production by John Battsek's Ventureland. It was first reported in June 2024 that Kylie had signed a seven-figure deal with Netflix for a fly-on-the-wall documentary. The documentary delves into public scrutiny, personal loss, and illness, showcasing how she earned respect beyond her fandom. The press release states, 'KYLIE explores one of music's most enduring icons who has consistently reshaped pop and sold over 80 million records along the way.'

Earlier this year, The Mail on Sunday exclusively revealed that Kylie would open up about her relationship with Michael Hutchence on the show. Back in June 2024, it was reported that Kylie was locked in a bidding war with streaming giants for months. Netflix managed to beat rivals Apple+ and Disney to the deal, with filming expected to start later that year. A source told The Mirror at the time, 'There was a serious bidding war over this. Kylie's had an incredible life, from starring in Neighbours to becoming a pop icon and still dominating the charts decades later. She has a massive fan-base so there's no question it will attract a huge audience.'

Kylie's Journey to Stardom

Kylie first found fame in 1986 when she joined the cast of Neighbours as Charlene Mitchell. After her stint on the show, she became the Princess of Pop with record sales of over 80 million. She has released 16 albums, seven of which have reached number one, including last year's Tension, featuring the hit single Padam Padam. Following the success of Tension, Kylie started her first concert residency at The Venetian Hotel's Voltaire in Las Vegas.
