Grand Theft Auto fans think they've spotted a major leak hinting that the blockbuster GTA 6 reveal on Netflix will be more than a one-off trailer. A screenshot of what appears to be the Portuguese Netflix portal for GTA 6: An Extended Look lists three episodes, pointing towards a three-part miniseries.
GTA 6: An Extended Look is set to premiere exclusively with the streaming giant. Announced by Rockstar Games as part of a landmark partnership with Netflix, the big reveal will take place on Thursday, August 27 at 3pm ET (8pm BST). It follows months of anticipation for the game's third trailer, which now looks to be included in the special broadcast.
Fans spot 'mind-blowing' detail
Fans claim to have spotted a 'mind-blowing' detail that further solidifies the extended look as a can't-miss cultural event. The screenshot, doing the rounds on Reddit, hinted that the episode listings would be spaced out every four weeks on a Thursday, lining up perfectly with GTA 6's long-awaited release date on Thursday, November 19.
One Redditor wrote in response to the screenshot: “The fact that all are Thursdays blew my mind, what a catch, congrats this makes sense.” Another remembered the recent words of Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, who hinted that GTA 6 marketing would have "appetizers, main course and dessert to follow".
Marketing perspective
A third fan wrote: “Thinking about it from a Marketing perspective, I‘m sure Netflix paid millions of Dollars for this and I‘m sure it‘s not just out of good will and a 6 hour delay. They also need to recoup the costs and “free trial + forgot to cancel” won’t be enough to break even.
“Without becoming a full blown conspiracy theorist, an episodic structure definitely makes sense to keep existing customers paying and turn trial tourists into long term subscribers.”
Key details hinting the leak is fake
However, there's just one big catch - the screenshot appears to be doctored. The first sign that the image appears to be edited rather than a genuine screenshot is a promotional banner that offers a 30-day Netflix trial for free. That hints that the user isn't logged in and as such wouldn't be able to see the run time or episode listings.
Those listings are also inconsistent - the official UK Netflix page doesn't display any episode placeholders whether logged in or not. While that is the subject of many thinking that it led to the page being taken down, it seems more likely that it isn't the case at all.
Finally, the URL in the screenshot hints at it being an edited image. On Netflix, title IDs that end in eight-digit strings usually belong to existing titles, whereas unreleased titles usually have unique promotional URLs - in this case, netflix.com/GTAVI.
Although there's every chance Rockstar could spring a surprise on us, the most likely explanation is that this isn't a real image and the Extended Look will be a one-off rather than a mini-series. Time will tell, and we'll find out for sure on August 27.
