Japan's premier gaming magazine, Famitsu, has conducted a nationwide survey to uncover the nation's most popular games, and the results highlight a strong preference for RPGs. While Western markets are dominated by franchises like Call of Duty and EA Sports FC, Japanese gamers gravitate toward series such as Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest. Nintendo also enjoys immense popularity, with titles like Splatoon and Kirby Air Riders performing better in Japan than abroad.
Survey Highlights
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Famitsu surveyed over 5,000 readers on various gaming topics, including the most influential game series, most desired sequels, and games with the most playtime. Nintendo was named the nation's favorite developer, while Zelda: Breath of the Wild topped two categories: favorite game to recommend and game to replay if memory were lost. Mario was voted Japan's favorite gaming character.
Most Influential Games and Series
The original Dragon Quest was deemed the most influential game, surpassing Final Fantasy 7, Dragon Quest 3, and Pokémon Red and Green. Dragon Quest's impact on Japanese gaming is profound, as it popularized the JRPG genre. The most influential series overall is Final Fantasy, followed by Dragon Quest, Pokémon, Mario, Persona, and Monster Hunter.
Desired Sequels and Remakes
Dragon Quest tops the list of series for which gamers most want a new installment, ahead of Persona, Dragon Quest Builders, and the Tales Of series. Notably, GTA 6 is absent. The most requested remake or remaster is Chrono Trigger, followed by Xenogears, Pokémon Black and White, Final Fantasy 8, and Tales Of The Abyss. Bloodborne ranks eleventh.
Most Played Games
Final Fantasy 14, an MMO, is the game with the most reported playtime, followed by Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (known as Monster Hunter Freedom Unite in the West). Other top titles include Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Minecraft.
The survey underscores Japan's enduring love for role-playing games and adventure, contrasting with Western preferences for shooters and sports simulations.
