Kev Townsend, played by Chris Coghill, has become an unlikely fan favourite on Emmerdale, despite being introduced as a dangerous and unpredictable character. Originally intended to be hated for coming between Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle, Kev has won over viewers with his impulsive nature, fierce manbun, and surprisingly human moments.
Why fans love Kev
Comments on a recent Emmerdale TikTok post show overwhelming support for the character. One user wrote: 'don't care what Robron obsessiveness think, I love Kev and I'm so glad he's back, I hope he's here to stay.' Another added: 'he's a breath of fresh air. He's just a character that ought NOT work on paper BUT is the perfect fit for the show! #WeLoveKev.' A third commented: 'brilliant character and actor i love Kev.'
The secret to Kev's success
According to Bradley Riches, who plays Kev's son Lewis Barton, Chris Coghill's improvisation is key. 'He is one of the most bonkers but beautiful people I ever met,' Riches said. 'He brings a new energy into the room. If you do twenty takes, all twenty takes are different from him because he plays what feels real.' Coghill himself has admitted that about 75% of his dialogue is improvised, making Kev feel unpredictable and genuine.
Grounded by humanity
Emmerdale keeps Kev relatable by pairing him with everyday characters. His connection with Lewis, who has autism, is particularly important. 'They're so similar and so opposite at the same time,' Riches explained. 'They both feel like an outsider sometimes, they both feel a bit different, they both feel like they don't have anywhere to fit in.' The show also pits Kev against true villains like serial killer John Sugden and kidnapper Kylie, highlighting his humanity.
New dynamics
Kev's latest nemesis is Nicola King, the café manager, who is suspicious of his influence on Lewis. Riches revealed: 'They'll have to learn to get along. They may not see eye to eye but they need to learn to get along even if it's just as work colleagues. It's really exciting, those two together. They have such a fun dynamic.'
