Charity Shop Game Bought for £6 Sells for Thousands

A woman in the United States has turned a £6 charity shop purchase into a life-changing sum after discovering the video game she bought was worth thousands. Jennifer Thompson, who had less than £30 in her bank account at the time, spotted the game Stadium Events at a Goodwill store for $8 (£6).

Stadium Events, a sports fitness game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, was first released in 1986 and is considered one of the rarest games in the world. Thompson had read an article listing rare games and decided to take a chance on the pristine copy.

After purchasing the game, she took it to a second-hand video game shop for verification. The employee reportedly gasped and offered her all the cash in the till, but she declined. The game was later sold at an online auction for $25,000 (£18,756) to orthodontist and game collector Tod Curtis.

The story was shared on Reddit, where users praised Thompson's savvy. One user noted that Curtis runs a YouTube channel restoring arcade cabinets and has a free arcade in his clinic's lobby. Another former employee of the shop where Thompson brought the game confirmed they offered her $9,000, which she turned down.
