Battlefront 3: Bungie, Respawn, DICE in talks, insiders claim

Lucasfilm Games is reportedly in discussions with several studios, including Bungie, Respawn and DICE, about a successor to 2017's Star Wars Battlefront 2, according to insiders.

The rumour first emerged from a retrospective book about the history of Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine, funded via Kickstarter and now sent to backers. The book includes a regular rumours column from 'Quartermann', which claimed Lucasfilm Games is in conversations with various studios about another Battlefront sequel.

DICE and Bungie in Contention

EA's DICE, which developed Star Wars Battlefront 2, is reportedly one of the studios in talks. The game was widely criticised at launch for its loot box progression system, which damaged its reputation. After the system was removed, the game gained popularity and saw a spike in players last year.

Bungie, known for Destiny and Marathon, is also supposedly in contention. While DICE is considered better suited for large-scale fights, Bungie is recognised for its gunplay, which has been a weak element of the modern Battlefront games.

Respawn and Bulkhead Insights

Joe Brammer, CEO of Wardogs developer Bulkhead Games, added to the speculation on X: 'DICE and from what I've heard Respawn are working on Battlefront 3. Not sure what that means for Battlefield.'

Brammer's comment is unusual for a developer outside the project, but it may suggest Bulkhead Games was approached at some point. As a small indie studio, it likely lacks the capacity to work on two big games at once.

Future of the Franchise

A collaboration between DICE and Respawn could inject fresh blood while maintaining scale, though many original Apex Legends developers have left Respawn, raising questions about gunplay improvements.

Lucasfilm Games vice president Douglas Reilly recently referred to the series when stating that 'huge AAA games' are a 'central part' of the company's strategy. With Star Wars celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2027, next year could be a prime time for game announcements.
