The ITV quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has challenged viewers since 1998. Now you can test yourself with 15 real questions from the programme, which is now 28 years old. The questions below were all answered correctly by a contestant in 2020.
Donald Fear's Million-Pound Run
Teacher Donald Fear used just one lifeline as he answered all 15 questions correctly to win the £1 million jackpot. His brother had previously won £500,000 on the show. Host Jeremy Clarkson described Mr Fear as "the internet in a pink shirt" and "an encyclopaedia with a moustache" after he became only the sixth million-pound winner in the show's 22-year history up to that point.
The questions cover topics including Disney characters, Doctor Who, medicine, religion, history and pirates. Unlike the TV show, this quiz does not offer lifelines, and getting a question wrong does not end the game, so you can keep trying up to the £1 million question.
How the Show Works
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? was the first game show in the UK to offer a prize as high as £1 million. At the height of its popularity in 1999, the show drew 19 million viewers. A contestant is chosen from a group of qualifiers by answering a question in the fastest time, then must answer 15 multiple-choice questions correctly in a row to win the jackpot.
Along the way are two milestone guaranteed wins, traditionally at £1,000 and £32,000. Since 2018, contestants can customise where the second milestone is set, anywhere between £2,000 and £500,000. If they reach a milestone, they may quit at any time and keep their earnings. Contestants may use lifelines, including 50:50, Phone a Friend, Ask the Audience and Ask the Host.
The Seven Jackpot Winners
Seven contestants have won the £1 million prize. Judith Keppel won in 2000 as the first winner. David Edwards, a Welsh physics teacher, won in 2001. Robert Brydges, a retired investment banker, won in 2001. Pat Gibson, a software developer and professional quiz player, won in 2004. Ingram Wilcox, a civil servant from Bath, won in 2006. Donald Fear won in 2020 as the first winner under host Jeremy Clarkson. Roman Dubowski, a retired IT analyst from Stockport, won in 2026.
