Cheese toasties can be taken to another level with one unusual ingredient: honey. According to recipe creators The Culinary Cartel, the secret to creating the “ultimate cheese toastie” is honey. It may sound strange, but the combination of sweet honey, salty cheese and crunchy toast creates an incredibly moreish sweet-savoury flavour.

How to add honey to your toastie

The method is incredibly simple, and you do not need to change the way you make your favourite cheese toastie. Simply cook it as normal, making sure the bread is crisp and golden and the cheese has melted properly.

If you don't have a toastie maker, you can use a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat instead “for the best crispy, golden crust”. If you rush the process by cooking it at high heat, the crust may burn while the cheese remains chewy and unmelted.

Frying pan tips and finishing touches

“When using a frying pan, press the toastie down with a spatula for a minute or two on each side,” the recipe recommends. “This pushes the bread evenly into the surface of the hot pan, creating an even golden crust.”

Once it is finished, slide the toastie onto a plate while it is still hot. Then, drizzle just a small amount of honey over the bread to add sweetness without completely overpowering the cheese. You can also finish with a sprinkling of chilli flakes. The gentle kick contrasts nicely with the subtle sweetness of the honey.
