The ECHO has delved into its archive to present 25 photographs from across Merseyside taken in 2016. The images capture festive celebrations, sporting moments, dramatic weather and everyday scenes from the city and surrounding areas.
A Year of Change and Celebration
Liverpool has undergone significant changes since 2016. That year brought an emotional moment for the Hillsborough families, national political turmoil, sporting triumphs for the city's athletes and the deaths of global entertainment stars.
The city is constantly re-imagined, redesigned and rebuilt as the old makes way for the new, but these photographs offer a look back at life a decade ago. The collection includes images from the city centre, surrounding suburbs and the wider Merseyside area.
Festivals and Sporting Events
Several photographs capture the International Mersey River Festival, including The Real Thing performing on the Main Stage at the Pier Head on Sunday, June 5, 2016. Other festival images show a wakeboarder in Salthouse Dock and Tall Ships in full sail at Albert Dock.
Sporting events feature prominently, with racegoers arriving at the Crabbie's Grand National Festival at Aintree Racecourse and Coleen Rooney pictured celebrating at the races. Euro 2016 is captured with students watching the England v Wales match at the Walkabout pub in Concert Square.
Memorable Moments and Tributes
The final memorial service held at Anfield marked the 27th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, where 96 Liverpool fans died at the FA Cup semi-final on April 15, 1989. The Hillsborough Family Support Group had announced earlier that year that no more services would take place at the stadium. Mary Corrigan, mother of Keith McGrath, made her final tribute at Anfield.
Other images include Simon Cowell being greeted by David Walliams dressed as one of The Beatles at Britain's Got Talent auditions outside the Empire Theatre, and crowds in Chinatown celebrating Chinese New Year, the Year of the Monkey, on February 7, 2016.
Weather and Landmarks
The photographs also document dramatic weather, including people caught in strong gales and rain on New Brighton promenade during Storm Jonas on January 27, 2016. Landmarks feature throughout, from the Metropolitan Cathedral at night to the Dazzle ferry Snowdrop sailing on the Mersey.
Further images show the Daniel Adamson steam-powered tug boat sailing into Canning Dock, the Sound City Festival at Bramley Moore Dock, and Andy Burnham outside the coroners' court in Warrington after jurors delivered their verdict in the Hillsborough inquests on April 26, 2016.
