Once dismissed as a joyless garment for the grind, the quarter-zip jumper has made a surprising comeback. According to a menswear expert, it is no longer just the uniform of City boys and finance types. Fashion’s attitude has shifted, and the style has been reclaimed by those who once deemed it uncool.
High-end labels such as Mfpen, Amiri, Dior and Louis Vuitton have introduced quarter-zips in recent collections. Celebrities including Jonathan Bailey have been spotted wearing them, and Polo Ralph Lauren’s cable-knit version was named the top menswear buy in the latest Lyst Index.
The challenge is wearing a quarter-zip without looking corporate. The expert’s number-one rule is to avoid the shirt-and-quarter-zip combo favoured by finance workers. Instead, swap the shirt for a T-shirt or a polo. If you do wear a shirt, keep it preppy – an open-collar Oxford works, or a shirt-and-tie with personality.
The zip itself offers styling possibilities: use it to reveal a pop of colour, such as a red polo, or a Breton stripe for added depth. Experiment with different underpinnings to find the right look.
For bottoms, choose relaxed silhouettes that steer clear of corporate vibes. Wide-leg tailored trousers, straight-leg jeans, work trousers or retro tracksuit bottoms all work well.
Finally, pick a quarter-zip that feels relaxed. Look for details like dropped shoulders, a relaxed fit, or contemporary fabrics such as scuba or ribbed knit. A sweatshirt-style quarter-zip can also help avoid looking overworked. The key is to appear as though you’ve thrown it on without much thought.
