Julien Macdonald Faces Backlash Over Company Liquidation

Fashion Designer's Dazzling Comeback Overshadowed by Financial Controversy

Julien Macdonald, the celebrated Welsh fashion designer known as 'the Welsh wizard', staged a spectacular comeback during last month's London Fashion Week. His flamboyant show was held at over 1,000 feet atop The Shard, attracting adulatory coverage and highlighting that celebrities like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Kylie Minogue remain among his most devoted fans. The 55-year-old designer declared his intention to reignite his brand in the fashion arena and raise his profile, promising to bring glamour to women worldwide with his unique style.

Company Collapse Reveals Troubling Financial Practices

However, this glittering narrative has been severely tarnished by revelations about the financial collapse of his company, Julien Macdonald Ltd. Just one year after his previous show in 2023, Macdonald was forced to put the company into liquidation, owing creditors a substantial £524,000. Many of these creditors were highly skilled, self-employed individuals who had worked tirelessly on the 2023 show, leaving them dismayed and financially disadvantaged.

The liquidation process has uncovered disturbing details about Macdonald's financial conduct prior to the company's failure. According to sources familiar with the proceedings, Macdonald received significant payments even as the company faced severe cash shortages. One witness detailed substantial payments from Mexican socialite Gabriela González, including £80,000 on May 23, 2022, £170,000 on May 25, 2022, and additional payments from her husband totaling £115,800 on December 1, 2022, and £94,000 on January 24, 2023.

Substantial Personal Income During Company Crisis

In total, Macdonald reportedly received income of £970,684 between September 30, 2022, and May 31, 2023. During the critical months of February through May, he paid himself £30,000 per month while the company employed only five staff members. The 2023 show required approximately 70 additional personnel for various roles including hair and makeup, location management, champagne service, and celebrity accommodations at the luxurious Corinthia hotel, where double rooms start at £750 per night.

Former acquaintances have expressed outrage at these revelations, with some describing Macdonald as a 'scumbag' and 'one of the most revolting, arrogant men you could come across'. They claim he was 'trousering hundreds of thousands of pounds' while his company teetered on the brink of collapse. Macdonald has declined to comment on these allegations.
