Claudia effect hits Scottish designer again after Traitors outfit

Edinburgh-based fashion designer Judy R. Clark is preparing for another rush on her designs after Claudia Winkleman wore her Cream Victorian Lace Shirt during Thursday night's episode of The Celebrity Traitors. The shirt, from her Lace Noir Collection, appeared as the celebrity contestants gathered at the round table.

Clark previously saw two of her hand-knitted pieces sell out within hours of the show airing. Claudia wore the Ebony Puff Sleeve Knitted Jumper and the Ebony Charcoal knitted tank, both hand-knitted in Glasgow, on the episode broadcast on Friday, October 9.

Scottish craftsmanship on screen

The Cream Victorian Lace Shirt is designed and handmade in Scotland using Madras lace woven on 19th-century looms in Ayrshire by MYB Textiles, Scotland's only lace mill and the only producer in the world manufacturing patterned lace on original Nottingham lace looms. The shirt features a high ruffled collar, full gathered sleeves and ruffled cuffs.

The shirt is available to order now for £450 and is made to order, with shipping in three to four weeks. Clark, who is based in Edinburgh, recommends ordering one size up due to the delicate nature of the lace.

Designer's reaction

Clark said: "Seeing Claudia in the lace shirt at the round table is a moment I'll never forget. The response to her first look in pieces from my Ebony collection was amazing, and it means so much to now see this lace, woven here in Scotland by MYB Textiles, on screen too. It's incredibly special to see Scottish craftsmanship reaching such a huge audience."

She previously said of Claudia: "Her fashion moments are so big now, it's all kept under lock and key. Everything she wears, people research and the fashion magazines - even Vogue - cover it. I am ready for that – if people want handmade Scottish fabrics, not fast fashion. It's all made to order special pieces."

Background and recognition

The designer is known for hand-tailored womenswear using Harris Tweed, Scottish lace and antique fabrics. She has been named by British Vogue as a designer "to watch" and her work has previously been worn by Annie Lennox, Emeli Sandé, Freya Ridings, KT Tunstall and Courtney Love. Her accolades include Designer of the Year at the Scottish Style Awards and the JOLOMO & PSYBT Award.

Clark worked in secret with Claudia's stylist, who spotted her work and knew it would work perfectly on the show. Stylist Sinead McKeefry posts details of the items Claudia wears on Instagram after each episode airs, and items worn by the host commonly sell out as viewers attempt to recreate her looks.
