Monojit Dutta, a photographer from Kolkata, captured a spontaneous moment of childhood joy using his OPPO Reno13 Pro phone, earning recognition for its natural composition and emotional resonance. The image, titled 'Leap of Happiness,' shows three boys running and jumping in a field in Canning, West Bengal, on a Sunday morning.
How the moment unfolded
Dutta had arranged for a large bundle of balloons to be waiting for him at Canning station after an early morning train from Kolkata. It was a Sunday, and annual school exams had just finished, so many local children were playing in a nearby field. He shared the balloons among them and asked three boys to run and jump, but did not guide their movements beyond that. 'Their energy and expressions are all natural,' he said.
After the shoot, Dutta sat by the River Matla to review his images. He noticed that one boy, perhaps tired, lagged slightly behind while the other two leaped into the air. 'I captured the moment as it happened,' he said. 'Later on, I realised that it had created a nice balance in the frame, with two boys on the left jumping in the air and one on the right still on the ground.'
Editing and intention
Dutta made basic edits on his phone, adjusting saturation and contrast slightly. 'I tried to showcase a life where children can play freely under the open sky,' he said. 'And I wanted to show the joy of Sundays.' The photograph has been praised for its authenticity and ability to evoke a sense of freedom and spontaneity.
The image was featured as a 'best phone picture' and highlights the growing trend of smartphone photography in capturing candid, meaningful moments. Dutta's work underscores how accessible technology can produce art that resonates emotionally, without the need for elaborate equipment or staged setups.
